Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior representative stated the incident made him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
