The United States central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
